What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a serious gum infection that affects the bone, gums, and other supporting tissues.

If left untreated, teeth can become painful and loose. Eventually, teeth can even be lost.

Gum disease treatment Yarm Teesside

Initially, periodontal disease is treated with non-surgical periodontal treatment. This involves scaling and root planing of your teeth.

Scaling removes plaque, calculus and bacteria from a tooths surface and beneath the gums.

Root planing smooths the root surfaces of your teeth, discouraging further build-up of calculus and bacteria. It also removes bacterial by-products that contribute to inflammation, delayed healing, and reattachment of gum to the tooth surfaces.

If the periodontal disease continues to advance, you may require alternative treatments which we will discuss in more detail with you.

Periodontal treatment is performed under local anesthetic so you will not feel anything. Like any treatment, you may experience some mild sensitivity afterwards, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and will subside within a week or so.

Yes. You can help prevent periodontal disease with a meticulous oral hygiene regime and regular routine oral hygiene visits. Regular routine examination appointments are also the key to diagnosing any potential diseases early enough for them to be reversed.
