What is a dental appliance

Do you snore? (or does your partner, for that matter!) Maybe you play contact sports like hockey or rugby and need a mouthguard. Or do you clench and grind your teeth at night, resulting in headaches, jaw ache or sensitive teeth?

We can help with all of that and more – people are often surprised that their problems that they had attributed to stress or working long hours in front of a computer screen can have a dental origin and be fixed by a simple appliance.

Why is the SCi needed?

Bruxism (the clenching and grinding of teeth) is a common problem thought to affect over 80% of the population at some stage in their life. Left untreated, it can cause numerous side effects for the sufferer, including headaches, migraines, stiff neck and jaw, earache, poor sleep quality, and tooth wear.

Apart from the damage to the teeth, there is nothing about the above that would suggest that bruxism is the cause. This is often the source of the problem, as too many sufferers are unaware of the true reason for their symptoms-seeking ineffective treatments from their GP instead.

There are plenty of treatments available for those suffering with bruxism – the most common is the occlusal splint. Occlusal splints function as a separation between the two arches of the teeth, preventing contact and inhibiting the ability to clench or grind.

The SCi

The SCi does just this and is FDA-approved for the treatment of headaches and medically diagnosed migraines. Made of a durable plastic, the SCi is designed to sit over your two front teeth, acting as a barrier for your lower arch. They are custom-made to your specifications and can even be fitted during your appointment.

Help is here

Our dentists here at Enhance Dental Care are trained to supply SCi occlusal splints.

Commonly called gum shields

Mouth guards are devices worn over your teeth to protect them from injury usually during contact sports just as rugby, boxing or hockey.

There are two types of types of sports mouth guard. You can buy a home-moulded general fitting mouth guard online or at a sports shop. Alternatively, you can purchase a custom-made mouth guard, in a design of your choice, right here at Enhance Dental Care.

Made specifically for you, our mouth guards fit your mouth and teeth perfectly, offering the best possible comfort and protection.

Suggested use

It’s common for mouth guards to be worn for high risk sports such as; martial arts, rugby, and field hockey.
However, for anyone playing a sport where there is a chance of trauma to the face, either from a person or piece of equipment, it would be advisable to consider wearing a sports gum shield.

They are a high-tech piece of equipment used to create an accurate 3D scan of the teeth and gums. The iTero prioritises patient comfort, precision, and speed all at the same time.

Our dentists here at Enhance Dental Care are trained to provide the Sleepwell appliance

Snoring can lead to relationship issues, daytime sleepiness, increased stress, and depression if left untreated.

Patients suffering from snoring often go untreated, as they are too embarrassed to seek help for their problem. Those that do try to get help often consult their GP for a solution, where certain lifestyle changes may be suggested including, weight loss, different sleeping positions, staying well hydrated and avoiding alcohol.

What many patients are unaware of is that dentists can provide a clinically proven solution to treat their snoring with a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS). The Sleepwell MAS is the most clinically proven for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate OSA.
