So, you want your teeth whitening?

This is the most popular topic in cosmetic dentistry – teeth whitening! As time goes on (the polite way of saying as we get older!) teeth get darker and darker, and that’s why whitening teeth makes you look younger. For the right candidates it is a relatively quick, safe, painless, non-invasive way of taking years off the appearance of your smile. But, you may ask, is teeth whitening suitable for me?

We’ll need to check that it is safe to whiten your teeth first, and that means checking for things like cavities, fractures, tooth decay and gum disease first – you don’t want existing minor problems to become painful major ones. Also, tooth whitening works very well on natural teeth but will have no effect on crowns, veneers or fillings, so it is vitally important to get a professional opinion before starting out – it might end up just being a waste of time and money, or worse, it could leave you with a chess board-like collection of some white and some dark teeth. Not a good look! This is why it is illegal for non-dental professionals to carry out whitening. Also, legitimate suppliers are forbidden from providing teeth whitening products to non-dentists, so not only do they not know what they are doing, they don’t know what reagents or concentrations they are using.

You will probably want to see our hygienist first to remove all plaque, tartar and staining from all surfaces of all your teeth so that we can bleach your teeth rather than the just stains. That way you get a more impressive result that lasts longer. People ask, how long does tooth whitening last, and the answer is that your teeth will always be lighter than if you hadn’t had the procedure, however, teeth will continue to darken with time – it’s like winding the clock back, not stopping the clock – so you might want to top up occasionally to maintain the benefits of a bright, white smile for the long term.

Before the law changed, we used to be able to get decent results with one-hour whitening. Now that we are restricted to using lower concentration whitening gels, it takes longer, ideally overnight for a couple of weeks or so. Not the instant result that everyone wants, but it is far more predictable and comfortable, with far fewer instances of sensitivity. We offer a couple of packages for your whitening procedure. They both work well and predictably, but one comes with your own desensitising kit to take home with you and has a guarantee of shade B1 or lighter.

One final thing to mention, whitening toothpastes and off-the-shelf kits don’t work. We’d sell them if they did. Save your time and money and get it done professionally for guaranteed impressive results that last.

Dental Crowns, CEREC Inlays and Onlays

Dental Crowns, Inlays and Onlays

These procedures can save a heavily damaged or decayed tooth.

Restorative dental care

Dental crowns, Inlays and onlays are used when a tooth is heavily damaged or decayed where there may not be sufficient healthy tooth remaining to support a filling.

We frequently use Emax, Inceram, Procera, Zirconia, Lava and Empress ceramics depending on your requirements and clinical situation. Alternatively, you can benefit from cerec (ceramic reconstruction) technology which allows us to design and manufacture your new tooth right here at our practice using CAD CAM technology and have it fitted in just one visit.

Inlays, Onlays and Crowns are used in both general and cosmetic dentistry

We usually advise the use of an onlay to restore a badly damaged tooth. Because it is bonded in place, an onlay will strengthen and reinforce your tooth to give you the confidence to eat what you want and smile again.

In cosmetic dentistry, we utilise ceramic crowns to cover misshapen or discoloured teeth, to hold a bridge in place or to cover a dental implant.

Tooth Filling

Tooth Filling

All fillings are white using either cerec ceramic or composite resin.

Fillings work well when there is plenty of sound enamel and dentine, but other options may be more suitable when the tooth has become badly broken down. In such cases, an onlay or dental crown is preferred.

We all know how much nicer white fillings look. However, many of us have had mercury-amalgam fillings given to us and were never given the option of any alternative. Luckily, with the 21st Century technology we have at our fingertips, it is possible to provide strong, long lasting and perfectly natural looking white fillings in either composite or ceramic. It depends on the size of the filling which option is best for you.

Dental Bridge

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge fills the gap of your missing tooth allowing you to smile with confidence.

Replace a missing tooth

A dental bridge is false tooth, which is fused between two crowns to fill-in the area left by a missing tooth. The two crowns hold the bridge in place and attached onto your teeth on each side of the false tooth. This is what is known as a fixed bridge, which can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth.

Benefits of a dental bridge

  • Eating, chewing and swallowing is a great deal easier with a fixed bridge over a partial denture.
  • Self-esteem and confidence is greater without the worry of missing teeth.
  • Fixed dental bridges do not need removal to be cleaned just brush your teeth and practice normal dental hygiene routines.
  • Hard-wearing ceramic bridges made on site in our practice using our CAD controled CEREC ceramic milling machine.

Dental bridges may be used as part of, or in addition to other restorative dental treatments including ; dental crowns, inlays/onlays and implants.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Implants offer a permanent solution to missing or damaged teeth.

Implants offer a permanent solution to missing or damaged teeth.

If you are missing your natural teeth you may find that there are other things you miss too. You may miss your natural smile or not being able to eat the food you desire. Some people experience muscle strains and discomfort as the remaining teeth shift. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It is a titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root it is placed into the jawbone.

What are the options for implant tooth replacement?

Single Tooth Replacement

Immediately (at the same time an implant is placed) or after a period of healing, an abutment is attached to the implant. This is a device that ‘abuts’ or joins the implant to a tooth form called a crown, which replaces the tooth part you see in the mouth. It will hold a custom-made crown that the dental laboratory will fabricate and match to your existing teeth. The custom crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment to permanently keep it in place. Once the crown is in place, it should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Fixed Multiple Tooth Replacement

As with single tooth replacement, temporary healing caps or abutments may be placed on multiple implants until the healing phase is complete. After healing, permanent abutments are attached to the implants. They can attach to custom-made crowns or bridgework that a dental laboratory will fabricate to match your existing teeth. In the final step, the custom bridge, which will replace multiple teeth, is cemented or screwed onto the abutments. The teeth have been placed without disturbing the healthy teeth next to them, and the bone loss has been halted.
