Neanderthals and Toothache

 teeth health smile dentistThe latest research out of Australia appears to show that Neanderthals used the active ingredient in aspirin as a painkiller. Researchers found a set of teeth that had ancient plaque on them, this plaque was able to save the bacteria and food for 50,000 years.

It seems that even without a dentist these Neanderthals wanted to take care of their teeth. They also appear to have been eating a natural antibiotic mold, somewhat similar to the penicillium we take today.

Three major research points:

  1. The teeth had a thick layer of plaque which preserved the food and bacteria on the surface of the tooth.
  2. Under this plaque they found poplar which contains the active acid in aspirin that causes the pain relief.
  3. They also found an antibiotic mold which would have prevented them from sickness.

“Dental plaque traps microorganisms that lived in the mouth and pathogens found in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract,” she explained in a university news release. Plaque also harbors “bits of food stuck in the teeth — preserving the DNA for thousands of years.”
